Cardiac complications post cardiac surgery
The major cardiac complications include bleeding that may require a return to the operating room, heart attack, heart failure and arrhythmias.
Emergency sternotomy
Practical guide on how to do a sternotomy on ICU.
Obviously this is only done when a patient is peri-arrest. The ideal is for the patient to get to OT for the procedure.
Non cardiac complications post cardiac surgery
Patients may have changes in cognitive function, stroke, pulmonary problems, wound infection and renal failure.
Late complications post cardiac surgery
Overall mortality related to cardiac surgery varies from 1 - 5 %, depending on the type of surgery performed, the length of the procedure and the time on bypass.
Mortality and complications increase with;
- Increasing age
- daibetes
- chronic kidney disease
- chronic lung disease
- poor heart muscle function
Intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation
This module covers the indications for an intra aortic balloon pump, insertion technique, mechanism of action and the contraindications and complications associated with its use.
